Goviken

Sunday afternoon we went for a walk along the Welland Canal
near Lock 2. The canal between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario has
eight locks and allows ships to climbed and descend the Niagara
Escarpment. It usually closes for the winter at the end of
December and opens again in April.

We took photos of the salty Goviken, a bulker carrier salt
water ship, registered in the Bahamas, built in 1987 in Rijeka,
Yugoslavia, 730 feet long, operated by Fednav International Ltd.,
with its head office in Montreal. Originally called Omisalj
(former owners: Viken Lakers AS, Norway.), it was returning
from Lake Superior empty where it probably delivered iron
pellets.

As you can see, ship spotting is a favourite activity for those
living along the Welland Canal. John has always lived within a
mile or so of the Welland Canal and you'll never know what you
might see going through the locks.

Night Parade, the movie

On the north-western corner of Niagara, on Lake Ontario, is the town of Grimsby. Both my mother and sister live here. Population, about 22,000. "The town of Grimsby was founded in 1787, when a group of about 40 United Empire Loyalists settled at the mouth of Forty Mile Creek. Its original name was The Forty. The town has gone through numerous changes, being first a small rural village; then a centre for the manufacture of farm machinery, hospital furniture, furnaces and other metal products; and later the hub of the Niagara Peninsula's fruit-growing industry. With a number of wineries and distilleries, Grimsby now serves as the starting point for touring the Niagara wine region." (Wikipedia) It has two secondary schools, 8 primary schools, about 20 churches. It is notable for a number of NHL players and Del Lord, Hollywood actor and director of the Three Stooges films.

Recently we went to the Santa Clause Parada. View a movie I created called NIGHT PARADE.
